The Norwegian Seamen's Church 1906-2006

The Norwegian Seamen’s mission started in 1865 by sending pastors to the big ports in Europe. After a while they were able to make establishments in the Gulf-area. There has been a Norwegian Samen’s Church in New Orleans since 1906.

In the beginning the church was ment to be a home away from home, for all the Norwegian seamen, and of course church for all the Norwegians and Nordic people living in the area. The church is still fulfilling its mission. Today the church visits 70 vessels in the Mississippi River. We have about 13 000 visitors at the church every year, mostly Norwegians and Nordic people living here in New Orleans.  We get in touch with students, tourists, the Skandinavian guests staying at our guesthouse, and also locals with a Nordic origin.

Today the church is open every day except Monday. We have a small store where you can buy Nordic food, some local newspapers from Norway and we are proud to be serving the famous Norwegian waffles. The church have its own choir, a women’s working group, “ young evening”, Men’s club and a mother and child group.

Every Sunday at 11AM we gather together for our Sunday Service, which is held in English every first Sunday monthly. The Christmas sale is our biggest event. Most of the income from the sale is given as financial support for the church. The church also has a Jazz festival in end of April until the beginning of May every year and a Golf  Tournament in May.

Welcome to the Norwegian Seamen's Church in New Orleans!

We look forward to seeing you!
